How to Do the Additional Reading Exercises
IT IS SUGGESTED THAT YOU PRINT THESE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE STARTING.
NOTE: The eCampus (Richland) and Canvas (Collin) versions of the AREs and MAPEXs are not timed, and you may save answers and return to the online assignment any time you wish until the deadline. However, I advise you to wait until after you have answered all the questions on paper first, then go into eCampus or Canvas and input your answers all at the same time. This method decreases the chances of something going wrong.
- Step One: Open up your browser and go to "Back to the Past with Doc Butler" (profbutler.watermelon-kid.com)
Click on the Additional Reading and Maps button (seen here highlighted in yellow)
When you reach the "Additional Reading and Maps page, click on the applicable Additional Reading and Maps button.
THESE INSTRUCTIONS USE HIST1301, ARE1 AS AN EXAMPLE. IF YOU ARE ENROLLED IN HIST1302, MAKE SURE YOU SELECT THE CORRECT LINK!
Choose the correct part of the course (Part One, Two, Three, or Four). For demonstration purposes we will use PART ONE.
Next, click on the link at the top of the page, which shows the title of the exercise and the PDF icon.
When the PDF document appears (in a new window or different tab), print it and then staple the pages together in the upper left corner.
Now use the links provided on the Reading and Maps pages to access the Additional Reading or Maps that correspond to the questions on your form.
- Read the entire question and all the answer choices before attempting to answer a question.
- Use the "Find in Page" feature of your browser to help you locate the section of the document where the answer is likely to be found.
- Learn how to "scan" a document for key words rather than reading every single word.
- Read the instructions: Most of the questions guide you to the page, chapter or section where the answer can be found.
Answer the questions by circling or marking them on your exercise questions form. Be sure to keep this form for study purposes!
AFTER YOU HAVE ANSWERED ALL THE QUESTIONS ON PAPER, log into eCampus (Richland College students) or Canvas (Collin College students) and complete the assignment by transferring your answers to the appropriate electronic version of the exercise. Be sure to do so no later than the deadline date shown on the course calendar!
MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT PRESS THE "SAVE AND SUBMIT" BUTTON
UNTIL YOU HAVE FINISHED ANSWERING ALL THE QUESTIONS! If you haven't answered all the questions, a small window will pop open, which tells you which questions you have not answered. Click on "CANCEL" and go back and finish before hitting the "SAVE AND SUBMIT" button again.
After you hit the "SAVE AND SUBMIT" button you will have a chance to view your score for the assignment. Follow the directions provided by eCampus or Canvas.
After all the students in your section have completed the exercise and the deadline date has passed, you will have a chance to view your responses, to see which questions you answered correctly and which ones were answered incorrectly. You can mark these on your paper form accordingly, to be used for study purposes. SOME OF THE QUESTIONS YOU SEE ON EACH EXAM WILL BE DRAWN FROM THESE EXERCISES.
